ICE FISHING BLUEGILLS
IN THE U.P.
We
have about 9-10 inches of ice on the lake right now and I would guess that
most
lakes are safe now up here in the U.P.
THE
MAIN REASON FOR CATCH AND RELEASE
While
fishing for Bluegills !!
There
are a few lakes (2 of the best) up
here
in the central U.P. that are dying slowly because of missing year classes
of Bluegills.
The
2 things I believe that are causing this problem is over fishing bluegills
and below normal
temps
for a couple of summers preventing successful spawning conditions. I heard
the
DNR
did a study on my favorite lake this summer and they determined that there
were
3-4
year classes missing and that it ill take years for the lake to recover.
Too many
fishermen
have to catch their limit to be happy. If everybody would just keep a
enough
for a meal and throw the rest back we wouldn't have this problem. Leave
your
5
gallon buckets at home.
